Holy Week:
It’s hard to believe we have reached the end of Term 1 already. In the Liturgical Year of the Catholic Church, we move from Lent into Holy Week and the Triduum before the Easter period. Holy Week is a most sacred time of the year for Catholics, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It begins with Palm Sunday, which marks Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, and includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Easter Sunday.
CENT Director’s Visit:
Recently we welcomed new Catholic Education Northern Territory (CENT) Director Mr Paul Greaves to the College for his first visit. Mr Greaves visited classes and toured our facilities. It was a wonderful opportunity to talk with Mr Greaves about the College’s growing student enrolments, the reintroduction of Doneley House and the need to renovate classrooms on the Chevalier Campus to manage the increase in student numbers.
Timor-Leste:
As per the College’s Annual School Improvement Plan (ASIP), the College recently undertook a community engagement visit to Dili, Timor-Leste. Our International Coordinator, our Marketing and Enrolment Officer and I spent three days in Dili meeting with current and prospective families. It was wonderful to be able to return to Dili post COVID-19 restrictions to reconnect with the community. We look forward to welcoming new students and families into the College community in the coming terms.
BYODD Programming, Pedagogy and Resourcing:
The implementation of the Bring Your Own Designated Device (BYODD) Laptop Program presents the opportunity to enhance the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into the teaching and learning program. The following will be implemented from the beginning of Term 2, 2023:
Textbooks:
Currently middle school students have access to class sets of Mathematics and Science textbooks. Whilst these textbooks have served students well, the current stock is becoming aged, depleted, and will become dated with the introduction of Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum. Thus, presenting the opportunity to transition to digital textbooks.
The College recently launched our partnership with textbook publishing company Jacaranda, whereby all students in Years 7-12 will be provided with access to the full Jacaranda Textbook eLibrary (JacPLUS) and the associated online activities (LearnOn). The Jacaranda Textbook eLibrary will include textbooks for all middle school core subjects (with the exception of Religious Education) and for selected senior school subjects. Please note that selected middle school electives and Stage 1 & Stage 2 subjects may require additional texts. JacPLUS: https://www.jacplus.com.au
Mathletics:
In addition, all students in Years 7 – 10 and the Intensive English Unit (IEU) who are studying an Australian Curriculum Mathematics course (not a SACE Stage 1 or Stage 2 course) will be provided with access to Mathletics. This resource will complement the Mathematics teaching and learning program and will provide an engaging support and/or extension resource for students. Mathletics: https://login.mathletics.com
Students will be able to access these web-based resources from school computer labs, student laptops, home computers and from some smart phones/devices. In the coming weeks students and staff will receive training on how to access and use these resources effectively.
Doneley House:
In 2024, due to the increase in student enrolments, Doneley House will return to the College’s vertical pastoral care and wellbeing structure. Doneley House, last in operation at the College in the year 2000, and named after former Principal Father Ignatius Tyson Doneley MSC, will be represented by the colour Orange with its crest inspired by John 6:1-14, Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand. This year, we commence the process of establishing Doneley House’s identity, pride and spirit. To do this, the College is calling for expressions of interest from aspiring student leaders to form the foundation Doneley Homeroom. The foundation Doneley Homeroom will be formed by 30 students, 6 students from each year level (Years 7-11) from the beginning of Semester 2, 2023. Aspiring student leaders wishing to be considered are required to submit an expression of interest to the Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Team. Expressions of interest, which can be submitted in multi-modal form, must respond to the following key questions:
- What relevant skills and experiences will you bring to Doneley House?
- How do you intend to build identity, pride and spirit in Doneley House?
- How you will welcome and induct the incoming Doneley House students into the College?
Expressions of interest are to be submitted to the Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Team via Mrs Ayesha Fatima by the last day of Term 1, 2023.
School Registration:
St John’s Catholic College will undertake our five yearly scheduled ‘Routine Assessment’ for School Registration during Term 2, with the process forming part of the cycle of compliance and school improvement.

NTCET Tracking
St John’s Catholic College senior students (Years 10 – 12) undertake the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET). The College regularly monitors the academic progress of all senior students to support successful NTCET completion.
As part of the monitoring process, a traffic light style tracking has taken place. Students have been highlighted in one of three colours to indicate their current progress in a Stage 2 subject and Stage 1 subjects as pictured below:
On Track: Students who have submitted all work to date and are on track to potentially earn a C- or higher will receive a green highlight.
Of Concern: Students who may have a missing task or some tasks not at a potential C- or higher will receive an orange highlight.
At Risk of Failure: Students who may have multiple missing tasks and/or multiple tasks not at a potential C- or higher and are therefore at risk of failing a subject will receive a red highlight.
Students are reminded to meet with their Heads of House if they are flagged as ‘of concern’ or ‘at risk of failure’, in order to complete a study plan. It is also highly recommended that students utilise the Learning Nest to complete their assessment tasks, catch up on work and receive advice from our tutors.
Students who are flagged as ‘at risk’ of achieving the NTCET will receive a letter detailing their current progress and recommendations regarding the NTCET completion.
Year 10 Students
A reminder to Year 10 students that by the end of the year you are required to have the following criteria in order to progress to Year 11 and be on track to achieve the NTCET:
- Minimum of 40 credits at a ‘C’ or higher

The first version of the SACE Exam timetable is now available; however, is subject to change and does not yet include the languages oral and written exams.
Students are required to achieve a ‘C-‘ or better in 3 subjects (60 credits) at Stage 2 in order to qualify for the NTCET. This is in conjunction with the 140 credits at a ‘C’ grade or better at a Stage 1 or 2 level and the successful completion of the compulsory subjects (PLP, 2 x literacy, 1 x numeracy units).
To achieve an ATAR (university entrance score), students are required to undertake 90 credits worth of Stage 2 subjects.

Dear St John’s Catholic College Community,
The end of Term One sees us break for Easter. St John’s Catholic College held our Easter Liturgy on Tuesday of the final week of Term bringing together Maundy Thursday, The Passion of Christ, and Easter Sunday in the one celebration. We were joined by Deacon Dean and the NET team who all reminded us of the importance of Easter to all Christians.
The NET team re-enacted the sentencing to death of Christ by Pontius Pilate. This resonates with all of us at St John’s as often we are reminded that not only should we not be too quick to judge but, unlike Pilate it is okay to go against the majority vote, and make a decision that in our heads and hearts, we know it is the correct decision.
The Stage 2 SRM class took a different approach to our Liturgy and used their Easter message to tell the story from the perspective of Simon of Cyrene. In class they learned of his African heritage and came to know more about this young Jewish man who was in Jerusalem simply to celebrate Passover. Unwittingly he found himself a central figure in the most famous crucifixions of all time. In their reflections on this, student found they had certainly learned more about the death of Christ but also about Simon and what it is like to carry someone else’s cross.
Middle School Religion classes took a break from the curriculum and partook in the Stations of the Cross in the Final weeks of term. Each were asked to write a paragraph reflection on what these 14 Stations means to them. Some of their responses are below.
“The Stations of the Cross to me serve as a reminder of the suffering and injustice that exists in the world today. By reflecting on the ways in which Jesus was mistreated and abused, I can be inspired to work towards a more just and compassionate society.”
“Overall, the Stations of the Cross are a powerful tool for spiritual reflection and growth, and they can help me deepen my relationship with Jesus and my commitment to living a life of love and service.”
“For me, the Stations of the Cross are a powerful way to connect with the story of Jesus' passion and to deepen my faith. By thinking about the physical and emotional pain that Jesus went through, I can gain a deeper understanding of his love and sacrifice.”
In the Northern Hemisphere, Easter usually arrives early in Spring. It’s that spectacular time of year when nature itself emerges from the dormant winter with the beginnings of new life. Yellow and red Tulips begin to rise from the cold and dormant earth, the leaves begin to bud on the trees, transforming the landscape into spectacular flowering colours and a sea of green. The Sun begins to shine with a new radiance, sending warmth at each rising morning. Creation itself reflects the glory and splendour of the Resurrection of Christ in many ways.
The death of the northern winter reflects the death of Christ and the silence of the tomb experienced on Holy Saturday. Everything goes dormant. Vegetation goes dormant, and animals and insects retreat into various forms of hibernation. However, as the days lengthen and warmth of the sun rises, nature itself is called from the death of winter into the new life of spring.
Here in Darwin we will be spared the harsh northern hemisphere winter instead we head into a spectacular dry season or Damibila season as the Larrakia refer to it. Similar to the Northern Hemisphere Spring Darwin’s dry season springs alive with new life in our streets, at our markets in our rivers and on our roads.
As we rise with Christ after Easter it is important to not only remember what we have achieved as a College in terms of our Lent and Easter period but now, embrace the new life that is ahead of us for the remainder of the year.
May God bless you all.

Health Focus Assembly (Vaping):
On behalf of the College, I would like to thank Dr Jo Seiler for coordinating and Holly Cahalan from the Darwin Private Hospital, for her presentation to the students to inform and raise awareness regarding the health impacts of vaping.
Health/Mental conditions caused by vaping:
Since it takes many years for diseases to develop, and vaping is still relatively new, it's hard to be sure of the long-term health effects.
Short-term health effects of vaping can include:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Anger/aggression
- Lung/Heart disease
- Cancers
- Throat irritation
- Coughing
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Headaches
With regards to the law, it is illegal to sell or supply vapes and e-cigarettes to people under the age of 18:
The NT Tobacco Control Act 2002 was amended in 2019 to include electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), and their accessories, as regulated products. Like traditional tobacco products, the sale of e-cigarettes requires a tobacco retail licence and the same restrictions that apply to the sale and consumption of tobacco apply to e-cigarettes. https://nt.gov.au/wellbeing/healthy-living/smoking In addition, by law, St John's Catholic College is a 'smoke free' environment.

Director of Boarding
To our St. John’s family,
This week we are trialling a new event at the College, we have invited our remote boarding families to a parent-teacher meet and greet at the school on Tuesday the 4th April. This initiative is designed to provide families with a process to engage in face to face discussions with the teachers of their children. We hope this will allow for the ongoing development of positive relationships between College staff and remote families, and provide an opportunity for direct feedback to families about the progress of their children in this educational setting.
While it is an hour of engagement at the College on Tuesday, for the families, it is a three day round trip. Most families will be travelling on Monday from their remote community, which for some is over 1000 kms away and requires two flights, or a bus/car trip followed by a flight, they will spend time at the school on Tuesday with teachers, then come to the boarding house for dinner with the staff and students at Boarding. They will then travel home with their children on Wednesday.
This shows a great commitment to their children’s education and a willingness to engage in their educational outcomes. I am grateful that we can provide this opportunity for our remote families. We look forward to some engaging conversations and look forward to spending time together. I know that all of the students will be looking forward to seeing their family and to travelling home on Wednesday for the Easter holidays.
We hope you all enjoy a special break over Easter and enjoy the short break from school during the holiday. Rest up, rejuvenate and return with energy for Term 2.
Kind regards
Scott Mannion

Harmony Day
The students of Burford House came together on Harmony Day for an assembly. We started off with prayer being shared in languages representing the many different cultures in our House. Students then came together to share food with one another and prepare an artwork with greetings representing each member of Burford House, a lovely message of welcome and warmth at St John’s College.
Year 8 & IEU Students Formation Day
On Friday 17 March, Year 8 and students from the Intensive English Unit (IEU) participated in the Year 8 Formation Day after it had been rescheduled earlier in the term. The middle school formation days provide an opportunity for students to come together and build stronger relationships as a single year group cohort.
The day started with an address from the Principal, Mr. Cameron Hughes, leading the group in the School Prayer and challenging the students to learn the names of all students in their year group by the end of the day. From here students participated in some sporting activities led by Ben Johns before heading to the Darwin Wavepool during the middle session of the day. Lunch was shared and students had another spell in the pool before an afternoon storm sent us back to school early where students were treated to the talents of one of our new students from Vietnam on the keyboard and some more games outside.
Overall, the Year 8 and IEU Formation Day was an enjoyable day for the students and helped them form or continue to grow strong connections with each other that will last throughout their time at St John’s. The event was a great reminder of the importance of building relationships and working together as a team. I would like to thank all the staff involved on the day which made it a success. The student’s behaviour at the Wavepool is to be commended.
Kind regards,

Daley House Spirit Day
Daley House Spirit Day started with a sausage sizzle breakfast for the School Community. A special mention must go to students Luca, Ethan and Rishi who arrived at 8.05 am and started cooking. We decided to use chicken sausage as it was a Friday during Lent.
At assembly time students went to Jubilee Hall for a brief assembly and then moved to the oval and participated in a few games of rob the nest. After the games, students returned to Jubilee Hall and watched the 3 v 3 Basketball competition organised by Mr Ben Johns and being quite a warm day, we gave out zooper dopers to all students and staff.
Thank you to all staff for your assistance and participation during the Daley House Spirit Day activities.
Harmony Day
For Harmony Day the Daley House students watched a brief presentation on the reasons for Harmony Day, after which the student’s placed orange painted handprints on paper plates with handwritten messages of harmony, hope and peace around the outside. These were then hung on the walls of the three Daley homerooms for others to see. The students also had the opportunity to make wrist bands with messages of harmony, hope and peace.

Dear Members of the St John’s Catholic College Community,
Congratulations to students who have represented the College at Darwin Interschool Sport days in Term 1.
St John’s sent boys and girls teams to Netball and 3X3 Basketball tournaments this term. Win lose or draw,
the level of enthusiasm and respectful participation across the events was consistently high, and our sports
representatives have started the year in a very positive manner.
The 2023 Swimming Carnival took place at Parap Pool on Friday 31st of March. It was a day of aquatic heroism and scorching house spirit from both students and staff. Daley, as they regularly do, claimed the first carnival honours of the year by a long margin. They are already looking a difficult proposition to knock of their 2022 House Champions perch, and the Athletics Carnival in Term 2 will be a day of reckoning for all three houses.
Next term the College will be sending teams to AFL, Beach Volleyball and Soccer Interschool Sport days. I canbe contacted on 8982 2222 or at ben.johns@nt.catholic.edu.au for any enquiries about sporting opportunities or events at the College.
Warm Regards
Ben Johns
