Newsletter Term 3 Weeks 6-10 2023
Principal's Report
Dear Members of the St John’s Catholic College Community,
Term 4 Commences Monday 9 October
Do It Anyway - Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centred. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.
2024 Planning
At this time of the year, schools are busily planning for the next academic year. This includes creating the College calendar, employment of staff, development of the timetable, and the establishment of classes. This task is made more challenging with an unknown student roll. Parents / Carers are requested to write to the College at admin.stjohns@nt.catholic.edu.au should their son / daughter be leaving the College (local or interstate) at the end of the 2023 academic year. Parents / Carers are reminded of the 10 weeks’ notice period for student withdrawal.
Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) 150 Years
In 2024, the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) will celebrate their 150th Jubilee Year. The OLSH have a strong connection with the Diocese of Darwin and St John’s Catholic College, including:

- The Hartzer Campus is named after an OLSH Sister, Mother Marie Lousie Hartzer FDNSC.
- Daley House is named after an OLSH Sister - Sister Mary St Anne Daley FDNSC.
- We often fundraise for the OLSH Mission in Mapourdit, South Sudan.
The College intends to honour and celebrate the OLSH in 2024. The following video has been produced to launch the OLSH Jubilee Year: https://youtu.be/pUzHVWxtYg0?si=VkoBaw_MJQaRv6M7

SEQTA is considered one of the top tier learning management systems that is available for secondary schools with extensive functions including: Attendance, Pastoral Care, Student Management, Assessment and Reporting functions, Teaching and Learning Programming, Scheduling, Student, Teacher and Parent Portals, and Home / School Communication. SEQTA will contain three platforms:
- SEQTA Teach - for Teachers (from Term 4, 2023)

Dear St John’s Catholic College Community,
Interim Reports
Our Interim Reports will be emailed to all parent/guardians upon the completion of the term. This will aid in reducing our paper usage & photocopier toner and the subsequent impact on the environment. Printed copies of reports will be available upon request through the College Administration team.
Please note that if you have any questions concerning reports staff are unable to respond during the holiday period. Relevant staff will respond to your queries when back at work.
Year 12 Students
Year 12 students will have completed their Stage 2 courses by Friday of Week 10.
All school-based assessment should be completed by this date.
SACE Stage 2 Exams
The SACE exam timetable is available for students here: https://www.sace.sa.edu.au/studying/assessment/exams
Also included are the rules for exams and how to prepare.
It is most important that students are conversant with the SACE exam rules. Students have been briefed on the rules and procedures for SACE exams prior to the Stage 2 Trial Exams.
On the use of calculators it is the responsibility of the student to bring their own graphics and scientific calculator which conforms to the SACE regulations.
The College will not provide calculators or batteries. It is students’ responsibility to ensure that they are on time with the required equipment.
Please note the following issues do not constitute the use of special provisions or extra time:
- Being late to an exam
- Calculators breaking/running out of battery or left at home
- Forgotten ‘cheat sheet’ for Mathematics, General Math, Essential Math exams
- Non-compliance with SACE rules and procedures
Some of the more important procedures from the aforementioned SACE site are below:
“If you’re enrolled in a subject or subjects that have exams, you’ll receive an exam attendance slip, which shows the exams you’re registered to attend and the relevant rules. You must bring this slip with you to all your exams.
Some rules apply to specific subject exams, such as those that may allow calculators. The following conditions apply to all exams in 2022, and will be reinforced as you prepare and practise for your SACE exams.
- Be ready at the doors of the examination room at least 15 minutes before the examination start time.
- You can’t enter the examination room more than 40 minutes after the starting time, or leave until 40 minutes after the starting time.
- You must hand your answer books to the examination supervisor before you leave the exam room.
- Some exams have a separate script book or question booklet for particular sections or questions. If you do not attempt such a section (or question), you must write 'BLANK' on the cover of the script book or question booklet before handing it in.
In addition to following the exam rules, you’ll be expected to act honestly and respect your fellow students.”
Signing the examination roll
If you have at least one external exam, you’ll be asked to sign the examination attendance roll.
This is a formal declaration indicating that you’ll comply with the rules on the examination attendance slip, including the conditions for the use of calculators.
Use of notes in an exam
Notes aren’t generally allowed in external SACE exams, but there are some exceptions.
- For General Mathematics and Essential Mathematics, you may bring one unfolded A4 sheet (two sides) of your own handwritten notes.
- For Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics, you may bring two unfolded A4 sheets (four sides) of your own handwritten notes.
These notes cannot include calculator manuals, but any complex key sequences you think you may need can be included in your handwritten notes.
Handwritten notes, unmarked scores, transcriptions and charts should not be placed in plastic sleeves and should not be laminated.
Approved calculators
Approved graphics calculators
Students may use any of the graphics calculators listed below in the external examinations for mathematics subjects and designated non-mathematics subjects. Examination invigilators will check the model of the calculator being used and students record the calculator brand and model on the front page of their examination booklet.
Casio | Texas Instruments |
---|---|
fx-9860G AU Plus | TI-84 Plus |
Previously approved calculators
The calculators listed below were previously on the approved graphics calculator list. They are not recommended for use in exams from 2022. Schools with students who wish to use these calculators should advise their students that the speed and functionality of the calculators in the list below may be a disadvantage in an examination. If students do wish to use these calculators after receiving the advice about the potential disadvantage, schools do not need to contact the SACE Board for approval.
Casio | Texas Instruments | Sharp | Hewlett Packard |
---|---|---|---|
Fx-9860G AU | TI-83 Plus | EL-9900 | HP 39GS |
Approved scientific calculators
There is no list of Board-approved scientific calculators. Any scientific calculator, except those with an external memory source (USB jack or SD card slot), may be used. All students are required to clear the memory of their scientific calculators.
Mathematics subjects
The following conditions apply to the use of approved calculators in external examinations for Essential Mathematics, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, and Specialist Mathematics.
Students are not required to clear the memory of their graphics calculators.
Computer algebra systems (CAS) are not permitted.
Students are required to clear the memory of their scientific calculators before the examination.
It is the responsibility of students to ensure that their calculators are set in the correct mode.
Designated non-mathematics subjects
The following conditions apply to the use of approved calculators in external examinations for Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Nutrition, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology, and Tourism.
Students are required to clear the memory of their graphics calculators and scientific calculators before the examination.
Students’ attention must be drawn to the declaration on the use of calculators printed on their examination attendance slip.

StudentsOnline – SACE Results portal for students
Year 12 students must log into StudentsOnline, the SACE results portal for students, in order to
access their results and ATAR at the end of the year. Students must log into the portal and ensure
that they have ticked ‘yes’ to the sharing preferences. By not doing this, you may restrict your result access, which may include not generating an ATAR as you have not ticked ‘yes’ to sharing with SATAC.
NTCET Tracking
St John’s Catholic College senior students (Years 10 – 12) undertake the Northern Territory Certificate of
Education and Training (NTCET). The College regularly monitors the academic progress of all senior students to
support successful NTCET completion.
As part of the monitoring process, a traffic light style tracking has taken place. Students have been highlighted in
one of three colours to indicate their current progress in a Stage 2 subject and Stage 1 subjects as pictured
below:
Progress Key
On Track: Students who have submitted all work to date and are on track to potentially earn a C- or higher will receive a green highlight.
Of Concern: Students who may have a missing task or some tasks not at a potential C- or higher will receive an orange highlight.
At Risk of Failure: Students who may have multiple missing tasks and/or multiple tasks not at a potential C- or higher and are therefore at risk of failing a subject will receive a red highlight.
Students are reminded to meet with their Heads of House if they are flagged as ‘of concern’ or ‘at
risk of failure’, in order to complete a study plan. It is also highly recommended that students utilise the Learning Nest to complete their assessment tasks, catch up on work and receive advice from our
tutors.
Students who are flagged as ‘at risk’ of achieving the NTCET will receive a letter detailing their
current progress and recommendations regarding the NTCET completion. If the requirements for
each year level are not met, students may be required to undertake another year of their current

Dear St John’s Catholic College Community,
During week 8 we welcomed St Edmund’s College Canberra to St John’s Catholic College. St Edmund’s brought 9 senior students to Darwin to lead us in our annual days of reflection. During these days, students had the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities and discussions that encouraged self-reflection and the exploration of their spiritual values. In particular, they are unique and sacred. We believe at St John’s which is similar to St Edmund’s beliefs that nurturing the spiritual dimension of education is essential in preparing our students not only academically but also as well-rounded individuals.
Activities included mindfulness workshops, guided meditation sessions, inspirational talks, and group discussions on topics such as empathy, gratitude, and personal values.
Catholic Identity Day
On Friday of week 8 Staff at St John's embarked on a Catholic Identity Professional Development journey, during that day I found myself reflecting on the profound responsibility we bear as educators in Catholic schools. Our role extends far beyond imparting knowledge; it's about shaping hearts and minds with values rooted in faith.
In the hustle and bustle of daily lessons, we must pause to remember that we are not only teaching subjects but also nurturing our students in a faith-based journey. Our classrooms are sacred spaces where we have the privilege to guide young minds in their spiritual lives.
Our Catholic identity is the compass that should guide every lesson plan, classroom interaction, and decision we make as educators. It's a commitment to embodying the teachings of Christ, fostering love, compassion, and service in our students.
Through our Catholic Identity Day we could deepen our understanding of our faith (whatever form that takes), so we can better impart its wisdom to the next generation. On this day we were reminded that our actions and words serve as a testament to our Catholic identity, impacting the lives of our students in ways we may never fully comprehend.
This PD was a catalyst for growth, renewal, and a reaffirmation of our calling as Catholic educators.
May God bless you all.

Dear Members of the St John’s Catholic College Community,
Instagram Report
Recently, the College has received several concerns from parents regarding Instagram posts made by students. We believe it is essential to address these issues promptly and provide guidance on how students can stay safe on social media platforms like Instagram.
What can the College do?
When a photo of a student or inappropriate comment is posted the college can only report the posts and contact eSafety authorities to investigate further. The college is looking into other ways to make students more responsible users by conversations in Homeroom and House meetings.
What can parents do?
Communicate with your children about their online experiences. Familiarize yourself with Instagram's privacy settings and ensure your child's profile is set to private, limiting who can see their posts.
What can students do?
Be mindful of what you share on your profile. If you encounter cyberbullying or harassment, avoid engaging with the aggressor. Instead, report the content immediately.
Reporting Inappropriate School-Related Pages: We have been made aware that some students have created Instagram pages using our college crest without authorisation. This is a serious concern for our school community. We have initiated an official complaint against such pages.
We kindly request that parents talk to their children about these pages and encourage them to report and unfollow any pages that misuse our college crest.

Director of Boarding
To our St. John’s community,
This week we farewell our boarding students for another Term. End of term is always emotion filled, with students able to return home to family and to country to be able to spend much needed time out bush or relaxing in their favourite place with loved ones. We will miss them but are happy that they get some time at home and can rest and recover ready for Term 4.
On Wednesday we held our Parent – Teacher meeting for remote families at the school. This involves a lot of coordination but has been a highlight on the school calendar. Our families were able to fly in on Tuesday, attend the school during the afternoon on Wednesday, where they were able to interact and have meaningful conversations with teaching staff about their children’s progress. After the meeting, we went to the boarding house dining room for a wonderful dinner together with our houseparents. The following day, families and their children were able to travel home together.
It really is a great way to end the term, to be able to provide interactions between remote families and school staff both at school and in the boarding house, to develop meaningful relationships which will support ongoing communication between the two.
Earlier this term, four of our students attended the Smith Family, Indigenous Youth Leadership Program, annual student gathering, in Sydney. Tyrell Lindsay, Brienna Tyrell, Deborah Tipungwuti attended with two of our College staff. They were engaged in activities and interactions with other students from around the country in learning about their own leadership style and skills among cultural interactions.
This was a positive experience for all and the students represented themselves and the school very well. I believe they had a very bumpy entry into Sydney where a big storm was blowing when they flew in, but after they landed safely, all had a great time. Thanks to staff Ben Friis and Zuleika Aylward for their support on the trip.
Finally, two of our boarding boys went away this week on a representative AFL team, The Flying Boomerangs, in Melbourne. Edward Darcy and Nathias Bourke-Miler were selected to represent the Indigenous under-16 team during a visit to Melbourne where they played a game and visited different sites around the city. Both boys played well and had a great time. Congratulations to them both.
We hope you all enjoy the holiday break and stay safe.
See you next term.
Kind regards
Scott Mannion

Doneley Head of House
Dear College Community,
What a term for Doneley House!
Doneley House’s inaugural term was full of excitement, house-spirit, fun and hard-work. A highlight for myself as Head of House, is seeing how the Doneley students have looked after one another. Year 11’s helping new Year 7’s find their way has been amazing to see, as well as a general sense of House spirit and comradery every morning in Homeroom.
The following Doneley activities took place from Week 5 to 10 in Doneley House:
Damibila Painting
Doneley students were given the opportunity to learn from and work with Nana Miriam, to paint a Damibila Doneley-inspired art piece for the school. The painting is coming along very nicely - the final product is very anticipated.
Homeroom Decorating
Doneley students have been hard at work to decorate the inaugural Doneley Homeroom. The back wall of our Homeroom tells the story of John 6: 1-14: Jesus Feeds The Five Thousand, the scripture of Doneley House.
R U Okay Day?
Doneley Homeroom students raised awareness for R U Okay Day? during Homeroom time, by putting posters around the College and by learning the importance of checking in with one another.
Handball Tournament 2023
Week 10 saw the inaugural St John’s Catholic College Handball Tournament take place. Eight students from each house battled it out for the trophy. There was some serious competition and many very close games.
Kind regards,
Benjamin Friis

Mandarin Workshop
Today we invited Ms.Qimeng Yang from the Confucius Institute Charles Darwin University to our Mandarin class for the traditional Chinese painting cultural workshop. Ms.Yang taught students how to draw the bamboo and flowers in a magically traditional Chinese way with her professional knowledge and skills. Students really enjoyed her workshop as she has always been passionate, friendly, and engaging with the students.
